Summative:
Definition: Summative assessments are usually high stakes and are taken as a grade in the grade book. This assessment is also used to evaluate the student and how much they have learned at the end of an instructional unit.
Unit exam: At the end of a unit or lesson the teacher will create an assessment that asks questions pertaining to the unit/ lesson that was taught.
Final Project: Students will create a slideshow presentation covering the overarching ideas and key points that they learned in the unit. This assessment will have students include important information they learned and allow them to show their new knowledge.
Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is low stakes and mainly for assessing students knowledge without a grade. This assessment allows the teacher to learn and collect data based on what the students know, allowing the teacher to give feedback and guide/change instruction to best suit the students.
3 Things: At the end of class students will be given a index card and asked to list three things that another student might misunderstand over the lesson.
Quick Write: At the end of class students will be given a questions and on a piece of paper they will write for 3-5 minutes answering the question given.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are a form of testing that has students perform a task instead of answering a multiple-choice answer test.
Create a poem: At the end of a poetry unit, the students will be asked to create their own poem following a list of specifics based on what they have learned.
Portfolio: Students will gather all their past work over the unit and create a document that holds all this information.
Interim/ Benchmark
Definition: Interim/ Benchmark are tests that are given in intervals during the school year. For example, once every six or nine weeks. These assessments are used to see how much the student is learning and how well they are grasping the topic.
District Assessment: This test is given district-wide and assesses all English 1 students. There is a multiple-choice answer portion and an essay portion.
CFA: This is a test that will be given to all English 1 students in the school. It is over a unit that is taught and the students will answer questions or create an essay.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessment is a way for teachers to collect data on a student's strengths and weaknesses over a new lesson/unit. This assessment happens as a pre-assessment and helps the teacher guide their future lessons to best help the students.
AR Guide: This allows the students to read statements about the upcoming lesson and check if they agree or disagree with the statement.
KWHL: Students will state what they know, what they want to know, how they think they will learn it and at the end what they have learned. This allows the teacher to see what the students know and what they want to learn.
