Formative

Definition: formal tests give to students in specific timeframes throughout the year

Example: District benchmarks are multiple choice formal tests given every nine weeks in various subjects.

Example: IStation testing is used to assess students' ELAR growth in specific areas every 9 weeks.

Definition: a way to get student evidence of learning, provides information used to adjust instruction, provides a way to give students feedback

Example: Pre-Quiz given at the start of a unit to assess what students already know and might need more instruction in

Example: Thumbs Up is a strategy where students can self assess how well they are understanding a lesson. Thumbs up means they understand, thumb straight means they are sort-of understanding, thumbs down means they are really confused.

Definition: formal test that covers everything that should have be taught/learned at the end of a period of time

Example: Final exams are large assessments given at the end of a teaching period to see what students know from all of the units covered

Example: Final Projects require students to use a variety of knowledge to put together a product that shows their learning thus far

Example: Running Records are used to assess a student's reading ability by assigning them a reading level

Example: Sight Word tests look at how many high-frequency words a student has familiarity with

Example: Science Experiments and finding results are a way to assess how student can perform with certain tasks

Example: Portfolios are a way to look at a series of student work and how they performed over time
