Diagnostic
Definition: An assessment that is used to collect information about a students strength and weaknesses in a skilled area to help direct teacher instruction.

SWRT (Single Word Reading Test): Measure of word reading to inform teachers of students reading accuracy.

Formative
Definition: An assessment that is used to gather evidence of students learning. Helps provide feedback and allows teachers to adjust instruction to achieve learning.
Examples
Quizzes: measures small parts of the instruction and allows the teacher to adjust instruction to meet individual needs.
In-Class Discussions: Students are able to answer well thought out question on the content learned while the teacher is able to correct misconceptions or assess comprehension of content.
Summative
Defintion: An assessment done at the end of an instructional unit in the year to evaluate student learning.
Examples:

Exams: evaluate student learning at the end of an instruction unit that can be compared against some benchmark test.
Performance
Definition: An assessment that measures how well students apply their knowledge,skills and abilities learned from a unit.
Examples:
Potfolios A collection of student works tha are associated with standards you are required to learn over the year

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An assessment that is periodic through the school year that has little to no student feedback and is low-level. Data is used to determine if students are on track in learning
Examples
District Assessments: Given to assess students knowledge at the end of each 9 weeks for mastery in content taught.
STARR: A test administered during a school year to check students understanding of content of statewide curriculum.
