Argument's for God's Existence.
Aquinas' Arguments for God's existence.
Argument from Change / Motion
From potentiality to actuality.
Things that transition ex.
Water
Fire
Gravity
Something puts something else into change / motion.
Obj cannot be movedd, unless relationship for potentiality to move.
Cannot go to infinity.
Has to have a first cause, first mover.
Argument for Causation
Efficient cause brings something into being or initiates change.
Things that cause other things to change.
NOTHING can be cause of itself.
Cannot go to infinity.
Has to have first to cause existence.
Argument from Degrees of Excellence
More / Less Good / Noble
God is the perfect iteration of a quality.
ex.
Heat
Cold
Boiling water =/= Highest degree
What is the highest form of Good, truth, noble?
= There must be a being in highest degree.
Argument from Harmony
Every natural way has a proper way of functioning.
Everything working how they should work.
Move forward at a basis of design.
ex. Birds know to fly south.
Moving toward optimal result
God designs with purpose / natural result.
WARNING
Major assumption.
If bird knows, it must be guided.
Something which possesses intelligence by which all natural things are directed to their goal.
We call this God.
Aquinas
People can know about God if they can't figure out what kind of God that is.
Reason / Revelation is complementary
Created arguments for God's existence.
Anselm's Ontological Argument
Arguments; A posteriori
We think of God as something which no greater can be conceived.
This being
which no greater can be conceived
, ...
Exists in mind
Or exists in mind & reality.
Assume this is the being
which no greater can be conceived
exists in the mind only;
Recall that existing in mind & reality is greater THAN mind alone.
This being in mind ALONE is not greater than mind & reality.
"Therefore, this being than which no greater can be conceived exists in reality as well as exists in the mind. "
Objections
Perfect Island Objection
Thinking of perfect island, doesn't prove islands existence.
Maybe not perfect island, but Anselms talking about the category of perfect things.
Fool's Objection
Faced Criticism for this.
Claims Anselm's definition is impossible to understand.
No clear distinct idea.
Anselm's Response: If one does not understand, then they are a fool.
He cannot argue with a fool
.
Burden of proof is on Anselm however!
