Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is a way to assess what students know during learning. These assessments are meant to inform educators about students' progress and decide whether they need to adjust lessons/instruction to help students achieve specific academic goals.
Ex: Observation of students' discussion: Students will talk about the differences of first person, second person, and third person point on views. Teacher will go around the room to monitor discussions.
Ex: Exit ticket: Students will write down a summary of what they learned in class and any questions they might have regarding the concepts presented in the lesson.
Performance
Definition: Assessments in which students have to demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have acquired through performing a task.

Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic tests are given to students to identify a students’ knowledge, strengths, and weaknesses. They are used to direct instruction in future lessons.

Interim/benchmark
Definition: These are assessments administered periodically throughout the school year to see how prepared students are for future high stakes assessments. These assessments are given to see a student’s understanding of content and help guide future instruction.

Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used to determine a student's learning at the end of a predetermined learning unit.
