Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is a process of gathering evidence of student learning to get feedback and adjust instruction.
Quiz: After students read a set number of chapters, give them a quiz over those chapters to test their reading comprehension.
Quick Write: At the end of a lesson, have students do a ten-minute quick write summarizing what they learned in class that day.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim or benchmark assessments are assessments that take place periodically throughout the year to monitor mastery.
Essay: At the end of the book, give the students an essay prompt to test their mastery of essay writing and reading comprehension of the book.
Group Project: In the middle of a unit, have the students work together on a presentation that incorporates different elements of the unit you have taught thus far.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are assessments that take place at the end of a unit or year with little to no opportunity for feedback.
End of Semester Exam: At the end of a semester, create a test to assess mastery of many concepts taught throughout the semester.
Research Paper: At the end of reading a novel/a unit, have students complete a research paper on the context of the novel. For example, at the end of reading The Great Gatsby, have students do a research paper on the 1920s.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is an assessment that requires students to perform to demonstrate mastery rather than tests or traditional questioning.

Diagnostic
Defintion: Diagnostic assessments are pre-assessments used to determine what a students knows before a specific unit or lesson.
Quiz: At the beginning of the year, have students complete a quiz to demonstrate their knowledge of certain grammar rules and literary terms to show the teacher what they may need to review with their students.
KWL Chart: At the end of a unit, have students complete a KWL chart to see what may need to be gone over again.
