Interim/Benchmark
Definition: A way of seeing where students currently are in their learning in order to determine if they are on track to do well in oncoming assignments.
MAP Tests: Computerized tests taken to evaluate students' understanding and level within math, literacy and reading.

Diagnostic
Definition: These types of assessments can be used as pre-assessments in order to determine a students' understandings and their weaknesses before beginning a topic.
Surveys: Surveys can be completed with parents and their student in order to assess their reading capabilities.
KWL Chart: Students will first state what they know, then what they might want to know and then finally what they learn.
Formative
Definition: A way of assessing students in order to receive feedback to modify instruction. Not a high stake assessments.
Classroom Poll: Students will answer a one-questioned poll on post-it notes and paste them on the whiteboard.

Summative
Definition: A way to evaluate students' knowledge at the end of a unit. Is usually considered a high stakes assessment.
Final Project: Students complete cumulative work over an extended period of time based on what they have been learning.
Chapter Tests: After reading a chapter, or several chapters, students answer questions based on what they have read.
