Assessment
Formative
Definition: A formative assessment is an assessment done throughout learning to help a teacher to adjust instruction to reach the end leaning goal that will be covered in the summative assessment. These are often what can be seen in a grade book as 'daily grades'.
Example: A know it- show it activity in which the students are able to showcase some of the knowledge they have learned up to this point in the unit.
Example: Having students work out math problems in shaving cream on a desk, and having the teacher check mark after each problem.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Often times these assessments are either district or state mandated, and they help to see if a student is on track in their learning.
Example: STAAR testing: A state mandated test that occurs in certain subjects and grade levels. This test provides the state of Texas with data as to how the students in the state are able to master the objectives that are required to be taught.
Example: Benchmark tests: These are tests given each unit by the school district that test the curriculum that is required to be taught in each unit. It helps to see where the student is in comparison to the other students in the district.
Summative
Definition: These are what are typically seen in a grade book as 'test grades'. In some situations, they may be worth a higher percentage than the formative grades. These grades are given at the end of a unit to test if a student was able to master all objectives taught.
Example: A unit test: A test given at the end of a unit and taken as a test grade. This test would include questions from all objectives taught in the unit.
Example: Essays: An essay type assessment allows students to prove their knowledge through their writing. It can be beneficial to students because their can be more than one right or wrong in a lot of situations.
Diagnostic
Definition: A diagnostic assessment allow you to see where a student is based on where they need to be. It can allow you to tailor your lessons to better serve the student.
Example: Where to start word test: This test allows you to see where a student is when it comes to their spelling. You read a word and have the student write it. It allows for the students to show their ability to break up the sounds in words even if they might not know the word.
Example: Running Records: Running Records allow you to track both your students comprehension and their fluency rate in determining a students reading level. It can be reassessed throughout the year if the student is showing improvement.

Performance
Definition: A performance assessment allows students to create something in order to show their mastery of content.
Example: Building a representation of housing based on an american indian tribe: This assessment allows students to use their knowledge and what they have learned about the many different tribes to construct a structure that shows their understandings of how they might have lived.
Example: making a city: Something that we had our students do this year to showcase their mastery of map skills is that they created their own city on a map. They then created a map key that had all the features of their map and described what everything was.
