Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are ways of gathering evidence of student learning to get feedback that can then be used to adjust their instruction accordingly. These types of assessments are generally low stakes.
Exit Tickets: Students can write down three things they learned, two things they're still curious about, and one thing they don’t understand.
Quick Write: Students can write down a short answer to a question posed after the lesson. This will help the teacher see what the students understand or don't understand.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are given to students at the end of a unit to see what they have learned. These assessments are usually high stakes and have a higher grade value.
Research Projects: Students will use the information they have learned or gathered to answer a proposed question and then share that information with others.
Final Exams: Students use the knowledge they have learned over a period of time to complete an exam. Their results are then analyzed to assess what the students learned.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are done throughout the school year and are used to see where students are in their learning. This helps educators determine if their students are on target with their learning to be successful on upcoming assignments.
MAP Tests: MAP tests are tests that students take on their technology to show their achievement in math and reading. Student scores can be compared to one another and used to see how much a student has grown.
Benchmark Tests: Benchmark tests are given to students and used to help the teacher see where their students are individually. These tests are used to examine student growth throughout the school year.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments usually have students perform a task rather than answering a set of questions or a normal test. This is assessing a student's ability to apply the knowledge that they have learned.
Portfolios: Portfolios are a collection of work done by a student that shows their accomplishments and a selection of performance. Students can use this to reflect on their learning and experiences.
Group Project: Students work in a group to complete a given task. The completed project can be used as evidence that students were able to apply what they learned.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are given as pre-assessments to figure out a student's weaknesses, strengths, and misconceptions. Teachers can use this information to help them plan their instruction to best meet their students' needs.
Running Records: Running records are used to assess what reading level students are on before they begin guided reading groups. Students will similar reading levels will be grouped together for small group lessons.
Pre-Tests: Pre-Tests are administered to students before they begin learning new information. Their results are used to see what students already know and what areas they struggle with more.
