FORMATIVE
This allows for ways to check for student understanding and learning, to provide feedback instantly to adjust instruction or prepare for future instruction.

Interim/Benchmark
This is the comparison of students understanding and or performance versus the state based standards within the school year.
Benchmarks tests are usually given at the beginning, middle and end of the year.

Performance
Performance assessments are where the student is required to perform a task or tasks, rather than a test with multiple answers.
Examples of a Performance Assessment would be performing a lab investigation, answering an open ended question with a few sentences, completing a research paper.
Diagnostic
This is where some type of pre-assessment is given to a class to gauge a students knowledge, skills, strength and weaknesses before instruction is given.
This can be done by conducting running records, fluency test, student work samples, math fact fluency, sight word test.
