Plot
Before leaving his school, he decides to say goodbye to his former history teacher Mr. Spencer. When Mr. Spencer tries to scold Holden his performance in school, Holden becomes annoyed and leaves Mr. Spencer's house
Back in dormitory while Holden reads his book his unhygenic neighbor Ackley disturbes him. Than his roommate Stradlater comes and talks about dating Holden's old friend Jane that night. Before leaving Stradlater ask Holden to write a composition for him.
When Stradlater comes back from his date, Stradlater doesn't like Holden's composition about his dead brother Allie and they fight which Stradlater won.
After the fight Holden leaves Pencey Prep to stay in a hotel until wednesday. On the way he encounters the mother of his classmates and lies about him while describing his son as popular guy to his mother.
After arriving his room Holden sees couple of pperverted thing through his window. He gets confused about his sexuality. In the hotel lounge he meets 3 women in their thirties. He enjoy while spending time with them but he gets only a paycheck.
Later he goes to Ernie’s jazz club in Greenwich Village. He sits alone and just watches other people. With disappointment he heads back to his hotel room. In the elevator he encounters Maurice. He agrees to have a prostitute, Sunny.
Holden starts his story from saturday. He is expelled from his forth school Pencey Prep because of his grades but he needs to go to home on wednesday.
Sunny comes to his room but he hesitates and makes up an excuse than he pays Sunny to leave. Than Maurice comes to his room for more money and punches him.
17 years old Holden Caulfield is the narrator of the novel. He presents his story to the reader from last december.
After sleep Holden calls Sally Hayes ,an old date, to meet up with her for a play. While he eats breakfast in a sandwhich bar he has a talk with two nuns which he gave 10 dollars.
Than he looks for his sister Phoebe at Central park. In the central Park he meets with Phoebe's classmate. She tells him that Phoebe might be in the Museum of Natural History. He knows that Phoebe’s class wouldn’t be at the museum on a Sunday. Than he buys a record for his little sister called "Little Shirley Beans."
Later he goes Biltmore Hotel to meet Sally. Sally is snobbish and phony, but the two watch a play featuring married Broadway stars Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Sally and Holden skate at Radio City but fight when Holden tries to discuss things that really matter to him and suddenly suggests that they run off together.
After leaving Sally he calls Carl Luce and Holden and Luce meet at the Wicker Bar. Holden tries to draw Luce talking about his sexual experiences which pisses of him and make him leave early. Than Holden gets more drunk and calls Sally again.
He goes toCcentral Park again but he breaks the record for his sister on the way. Than he decides to go see Phoebe. He gets to his brothers room which Phoebe sleeps. He wakes up her and thay chat about Holden's school and his fantasy of being “the catcher in the rye” . Phoebe tells him that he has confused with the poem that he took the image from.
When their parents gets back home Holden flees and visits his former English teacher Mr. Antolini to stay at his place. They talk about Holden's life before he goes to sleep. Than he wakes up by Mr. Antolini patting his head which Holden find very strange and he leaves quickly.
In the morning meets with Phoebe for lunch to say goodbye before he goes away. She insist on running away with him which Holden refuses. At the end Holden decides to stay. The story ends when Holden take Phoebe to a carousel and watches her ride carousel happily.
In the final chapter, Holden is at the sanitarium in California. He plans to go to a new school in the fall and is cautiously optimistic about his future. He doesn't want to tell us any more but the whole story has only made him miss people, even the jerks.
