Formative
Definiton: Formative assessment is a way of assessing students to get feedback to use for modifying and adjusting instruction. These assessments are low stakes, so they have little to no grade value.
Example: A padlet or a great activity to introduce material. Something to test students understanding of some material. it's not to test a student overall knowledge of material.
Summative
Definiton: Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning at the end of a unit. These are usually high stakes, so they have a high grade value.
The best example of this is midterm exams or end of the unit exams that focus only on the lectured material given in the unit.
Another example is an essay prompt given by the teacher as a grade and not a project.
Benchmark
Definiton: Interim/benchmark assessments are used to see where students are in their learning and determine if they are on track with their learning to do well on future assessments.
Example of benchmark assessments in the classroom would be something like the STARR exam or unit exam at the end of the semester. Could also include AP exams.
Diagnostic
Definition Diagnostic assessments are used as forms of pre-assessments to determine a student's strengths and weaknesses as well as prior misconceptions. This information can help teachers to plan their instruction to meet student needs.
Testing students on prior knowledge is a great example. Students must be able to have an understanding of some material prior to entering a topic. An assessment over material from 8th grade US prior to starting class in 11th grade US is the best example.
Performance
Definiton: A performance assessment is an assessment that requires students to perform a task rather than regular tests or answering questions.
Example of this is teacher creating an activity that can test students overall understanding of the material like an essay or even them doing a project overall the material.
