Summative Assessment
End of year or curriculum assessment that reviews content taught over the course of the year. These assessments are to evaluate student learning, thus little opportunity to improve learning is done with these assessments.
Examples
Research Project: Students use what they learned to create a project that encapsulates everything they learned throughout the year
Final Exam: A written exam that contains content learned throughout the entire year. Students are tested on stuff ranging from beginning of the semester to the end of the year, thus little room to improve learning is facilitated.
Performance Assessments
A performance assessment is not like a usual assessment in which a student is asked to answer multiple choice questions, rather a student is asked to perform a task.
Examples
Reader's Theatre: A reading activity in which students are required to act out moments within the text from their guided reading books
