Formative
Definition: A formative Assessment is a strategy where the instructor can gather information about student learning and use this data to guide how they adjust their instruction for future lessons.
Formal Formative Assessment Example: A google form that has five questions that are either multiple choice or true/false. They will take this after the lesson so the teacher can review and make lesson plans based on student needs
Informal Formative Assessment Example: While students are working as table groups or with partners, the teacher can circulate the room and listen in to see if students are working effectively or if they are struggling on any specific content. The teacher can also ask strategic questions to see if students can make correct answers or if they might need more instruction.

Interim/benchmark
Definition: These are periodic tests that are given throughout the year that are used to see if students are on track in the progression of their learning.
Example #1: The STARR Test is a standardized test in the state of Texas that students begin taking yearly in the 3rd Grade. It assess the knowledge that students have learned and measure academic achievement.
Example #2: iStation is a computerized test that is given monthly to students that measures many different skills that students have in RLA and compares their overall percentile rating to other students across the state they are in.
Summative
Definition: Summative Assessments are typically given at the end of a unit in any subject. They are often worth a higher percentage of a students overall grade.
Example #1: In social studies in higher grade levels, students are required to write Essays known as Free Response Question (FRQ). In these students are required to use different pieces of evidence to construct an argumentative essay that answers a specific prompt given to them.
Example #2: End/Mid-Term exams are given at the end of each semester and are often cumulative of all the information taught throughout that semester.

Diagnostic
Definition: The diagnostic tests are given before content is taught and is used to measure a students abilities and to let the instructor know what they will need to focus on through the process of teaching.
Example #1: A Running Record is a pre assessment that the teacher can use to track a students reading level.
Example #2: A KWL chart is something a teacher can give to students before a certain piece of content is taught. it prompts students to state what they know, what they want to know and then what they learned after the lesson. it is a good way to evaluate what students already have an understanding of and in turn, help shape lesson plans.
Preformance
Definition: The performance assessment is different that other because instead of having the typical test format, students need to preform a task in order to complete it.
Example #1: Having students give a speech over a research topic can assess a students understanding in following a rubric, doing correct research and formatting a speech that can provide information in a comprehensive way.
Example #2: Readers Theater is an way to test students comprehension skills. Students will not only act out scenes from a text that is being studied, but also have to analyze the emotions being presented by the author.
