Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Assessment to test if students are in the appropriate level of understanding within certain content areas.
Example 1: STAAR tests allow educators to see students' knowledge and understanding of the content they learned within each of their classes.
Example 2: MAP testing allows students from K-12 to test their math, science, and reading skill and knowledge from their level of study.
Performance
Definition: An assessment that test students abilities to apply the information they learned by performing a task.
Example 1: Students in a speech class having to perform a speech in front of the class, be assigned or their own.

Summative
Definition: An assessment that test a large chunk of content or many units. Teachers can see if student have progressed on the knowledge and skills needed to continue the curriculum.
Example 1: Mid-terms allow teacher to get knowledge if students understood the units from the first half of the year.
Example 2: An assigned final project/essay can test if students are able to evaluate their understanding on one or many concepts through a final product.
Diagnostic
Definition: An assessment given before and/or after starting a new unit to see where students are within certain skill/knowledge areas.
Example 1: K-W-L charts allow students to organize their current knowledge about a concept and "wonder" what other aspects or question they could know about the subject.
Example 2: SAT has diagnostic assessment to test what areas in each content area students need to study.
Formative
Definition: A small scale assessment to test student understanding of a unit or area of content. Used to gather evidence of student mastery and guide future learning.

Example 2: Observing and listening to student discussions allow teachers to gain knowledge on student understanding and perhaps assist them right away.
Example 3: Using homework to be turn in within the week lets teachers see if the understand the previous lesson(s).
