Assessments
Formative
Formative assessments are used to gather evidence of student learning so that teachers are able to provide feedback and adjust instruction.
Formative assessments can be quizzes, discussions, or exit tickets, among others.
Interim
Interim assessments, or benchmark assessments, are periodic testing that takes place throughout the course of a school year.
Interim assessments can include projects, written assignments, and traditional tests.
Summative
Summative assessments occur at the end of a large segment of learning and are used to determine what students have learned.
Summative assessments can include final exams, big projects, and standardized tests, among others.

Diagnostic
Diagnostic assessments are a form of pre-assessment that allows for teachers to determine students’ strengths and weaknesses going into a lesson or unit.
Diagnostic assessments can include running records, phonological awareness tests, and checklists of behaviors, among others.
Performance
Performance assessments require students to perform a task as opposed to taking a traditional pen and paper test.
Performance assessments can include conducting a lab, creating a portfolio, and writing a research paper, among others.
