Formative
Formative assessments are assessments that gather information on the student, provide feedback for the students, and teachers use the information to adjust instruction
One example of a formative assessment is an exit slip. students would have to answer a question about what they learned after a lesson or at the end of the day.
Another example of a formative assessment is thumbs up, thumbs down, and thumbs in the middle. a teacher can use this when having students respond to a question to gangue weather or not they are grasping the content.
Interim/Benchmark
An interim or benchmark assessment is a type of assessment that assesses students at specific times in a year. It is a more formal type of assessment and provides the students with very little feedback.
-
Another example of an interim/benchmark assessment is at my placement this semester the students have to do map testing which happens at the end of every six weeks.
Performance
Performance assessments are assessments that require students to explain themselves or create something rather than choose an answer.
-
Another example of a performance assessment is Readers theatre, students would have to read a story, and retell it without help from the book.
Summative
Summative assessments are assessments that occur at the end of a learning [period and measure what the student has learned in that time.
-
Another example is a live museum/ wax museum. This is where the students have to take their knowledge about what they have learned and retell it as if there were that person or thing from the learning.
Diagnostic
Diagnostic assessments are tools that we use to determine a students current and previous knowledge that they have learned.
One example of a diagnostic assessment is a running record. This is where a student reads a short story on their grade level, that is timed and it scores their proficiency level, their words per minuet, their error rate, and their self-correction rate.
Another example of a diagnostic assessment is sight word recognition. the students are asked to quickly recall specific sight words, and they have to fluently recognize them.
