Assessment of Learning
Wallie Brackett (Summative Assessment)
The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some
standard or benchmark.
Summative assessment examples:
End-of-term or midterm exams.
Cumulative work over an extended period such as a final project or creative portfolio.
End-of-unit or chapter tests.
Standardised tests that demonstrate school accountability are used for pupil admissions; SATs, GCSEs and A-Levels.
Summative assessments are used to evaluate
student learning, skill acquisition, and academic achievement at the conclusion of a defined instructional period—typically at the end of a project, unit, course, semester, program, or school year.
Formative evaluation is usually facilitated during the development or improvement of a course. Summative evaluation consists of making judgments about the effectiveness of a course at its conclusion.
