Formative
The process of gathering students learning to use in order to guide instruction. This process is a circulating circular process and includes: gathering evidence, evaluating evidence, feedback, adjust instruction.

Diagnostic

A diagnostic assessment assess the students' current knowledge. These assessments can be multiple-choice or short answer. The data gathered allows teachers to differentiate instruction to the students' needs. Progress can be monitored by comparing the diagnostic to other assessments throughout the unit.

Performance
A performance assessment requires students to complete a task rather than select an answer. These assessments tend to be open-ended and require students to demonstrate what they know. These assessments are evaluated by experienced raters using a set criteria such as rubric.

Summative
A summative assessment is given at the end of a unit or year. Grading is necessary and the scores are used for report cards and/or district and state reports. Students should be prepared to take these assessments and know when they will take place. There is a low opportunity to improve student learning with this type of assessment.

Benchmark

Benchmark assessments are given periodically such as one a month or at the completion of a quarter. These assessments are used to gather baseline data and measure progress towards an academic standard or goal.
