Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative Assessments serve the purpose of assessing the student's knowledge of the content and providing feedback to the teacher. With the evidence gathered of student learning, the teacher can reevaluate their instruction and adjust to enhance student achievement.
Discussions: The teacher can have a discussion about the instructional content and ask the students questions during this time. The teacher can take notes on the student's responses and evaluate the student's comprehension.
Quizzes:Throughout the unit, the teacher can utilize quizzes to formatively assess their student's understanding. These quizzes can be short or long, and they can be for a grade or used to gain awareness of the student's comprehension.
Summative
Definition:Summative assessments are generally high stake assessments that have a high-value grade. These assessments occur at the end of a unit or period. Summative assessments are utilized to evaluate student learning.
Final Exams:At the end of a unit or semester, a teacher can give the student's a final exam. Final exams are tests covering all of the content learned up until that point.
Standardized Testing:Standardized testing is utilized to evaluate the student's knowledge of what is expected to be learned and determine whether they have met state standards for their grade level.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostics are a form of assessment that requires the student to perform a task. Generally, diagnostic assessments calculate the student's ability to apply skills they are expected to know from the unit.
Pre Assessment: A quiz that teachers can administer at the beginning of a unit to assess what the students already know entering the unit.
KWL Chart: Teachers can create an anchor chart divided into three categories; what the students know, what they want to know, and what they learned. These charts are an excellent way to have reasonable discussions about a concept beforehand and determine what the students already know.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition:The purpose of a interim/benchmark is to identify student progress and track future student achievement.

6 Week Assessments: Assessments that occur at the end of six weeks and track the student's knowledge learned.
Performance
Definition: Performance Assessments are usually hands on and require the students to create or perform a task.
Research Paper: The student must research a topic they are discussing and write an essay analyzing the information.
