Formative
Definition - Formative assessments are used to gather evidence of student learning that allows you to gather feedback in order to modify lessons to fit students' needs.
Exit Ticket - Students have 1 to 2 questions over the topic just learned to answer and turn in in order to leave class that day.

Performance
Definition - This type of assessment has students perform or complete a task rather than a traditional test with set questions to answer.
Portfolios - This is when students create a folder of all the work they have completed in this class up until that point.
Debates - Students prepare an argument for one side or the other and then come together and debate in front of the class with the opposing side of the topic.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition - Interim/benchmark assessments are used to see how students are progressing with their learning. These assessments are usually set up with the school district and compared within kids on the other campuses.
District Assessments - Lubbock ISD does district assessments at the end of a grading period to assess where students are on their learning compared to other students in the same grade level across the district.
STAAR - This form of assessment is given to students in the state of Texas at the end of the school year to see whether or not they meet the criteria to move on to the next grade level.
Summative
Definition - Summative assessments are used to evaluate the students' learning at the end of a large chunk of learning.

Research Papers - Done at the end of a semester or term, research papers require students to use all aspects of the class thus far. They have student think in depth about all past units of the content.
Diagnostic
Definition - These assessments are used as a pre-test to show teachers where their students are int he learning process. This allows teachers to see what prior knowledge the students have and plan lessons around what they don't know yet.
Journals - This form of diagnostic assessment can be used to see what students already know. The teacher can have students write down everything they know about a specific topic or lesson in 2 minutes, then have a few students share to the class.
Surveys - Surveys can be used to ask the students who remembers specific things from past grade levels or lessons. This is especially helpful at the beginning of the year when you may have students coming in from different schools and teachers.
