prince
it is not necessary for a prince to have all the traits it is necessary to appear to have them. do not confuse appearance with reality. by having moral virtues, and always observing them they are harmful and by appearing to have them it is useful.
be moral when you can, don't be moral when you must.
merciful rather than cruel, faithful rather than unfaithful, humane rather than inhumane, honest rather than dishonest, religious rather than impious
good to have a reputation or morality. when you can be good, do so. but to remain with a spear built, so if you need to not be those things, you are able and know how. a prince and especially a new prince cannot observe (conform) in all those things for men are held for.
theme of hatred.
people will praise and blame. use language of virtue and vice. to be given a reputation. giving opinion about the one being targeted. practice a human life of praising and blame. targeted are come to have a reputation about the way they appear to others. the appearance is not necessarily the reality. should a prince seek to have a reputation while not in reality conducting themselves in a basis for that reputation or should you avoid having a certain kind of reputation, but indifferent to the reputation. the reality is not affected by the reputation.
prince must avoid being hated by the people. greatest cause: stealing, not respecting the property of the people.
steal and become hated or become contemptible in the eyes of enemies. becoming contemptible increases hatred from people because prince is unable to protect them
a prudent prince should not confuse being feared with being hated. a prince should want to be loved, but makes him dependent on beloved. people are fickle, can withdraw their love. prince can enjoy being loved, but choose being feared. he is the one who imposes fear. if he is dependent on their love, they gain power over him.

if a prince is going to be successful and not be disempowered he has to learn something. lean when not to be good. (moral goodness)
if all men were good, this teaching would not be good. (not be effective teaching) but because they are wicked, and do not observe faith (fidelity) with you. you also do not also have to observe with them. nor does a prince observe to cover his to observe faith.
if generosity is a moral virtue what are the conditions that an individual has to satisfy if he is going to be liberal. he has to have sufficient property, means, so he can provide for himself and have sufficient left over that he can afford to give to others.
but because he cannot have them(moral virtues) nor holy observe them. since human conditions do not permit it. the fact that not all human beings are themselves morally good. always expect that there are humans who are morally wicked who do not observe virtues. not necessary for him to be so prudent. to know how to avoid the infamy of those vices that would take his state from him.
liberality is a moral virtue a prudent prince can cultivate as a reputation but not if it requires being liberal. liberal leads to hatred by the people and contempt from the people and external enemies.
afford reputation for stingy and liberal, but cannot actually be liberal.
for a prince should have two fears, one within one without.
be worried about wickedness as well as wickedness without. live by law, rule by law.
it is foolish to think that there is a safe course of action which is not accompanied by dangerous consequences. for in the order of things, it is found that one never seeks to avoid bad things without running into another.
but prudence consists of knowing how to recognize qualities of inconveniences, picking the less bad, as good. (lesser evil as good)

the best fortress there is, is not to be hated by the people. you can live in a big castle -- that is not going to protect you from the hatred of the people.
