a document used during the initial phase of planning. These can be used by individuals or as part of a team.

can allow ideas to be generated for implicit and open requirements
identify and record project requirements
breaks the tasks down into tasks and sub tasks

can get easily over complicated
can be difficult to elaborate on tasks
mood boards
a collection of images, materials, words, fonts and objects that are used to create a 'feel' for the project and/ or product
strengths
allows you to involve the client early on as they can see your ideas
useful when generating ideas about content and house style
shows agreed decisions on style
they clarify the vision as the production team can use it when creating the product
weaknesses
doesn't show the detailed timeline from start to end of product
can sometimes be vague
can sometimes only focus on environmental factors rather than characters and a narrative
blue sky thinking (BST)
a group of individuals get together with an empty piece of paper or a whitteboard. Having read the brief, ANY thoughts, words and colours are written down. No idea is discounted or criticised at this point.

allows for creativity
creative ideas are generated regardless of practical constraints
collaboration - lots of people involved so different ideas are recorded
weaknesses
too many ideas so not a clear idea is thought out
team members could have polar opposite ideas making it difficult to finalise an idea
SWOT analysis
stands for 'Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats' - using these four headings you can reduce your initial ideas down to one idea that you can take forward.

identify any weaknesses and potential threats early in the process to your project so you can defend against them
helpful in the planning process

cannot be used for effectively manage time scales
