Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are non-traditional assessments that have a student complete a task or project and not answer in multiple choice form.
EX 1- Play-dough geography: Students are to make geography features out of homemade play-dough and put on a piece of card board. this will assess if they know their geographical features(river, mountain, basin, ocean, etc.)
EX 2- Self poetry: students have to make a haiku poem about a topic to assess their knowledge on the features that haiku's have.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim or benchmark assessments are used to see where students are in aligned to what they should know for a certain time of the school year. They determine if students are on track for the year. There is still time to adjust instruction after an interim assessment.
EX 1- STAAR Benchmarks: Students take benchmarks starting in 2nd grade in the middle of the school year to assess if they are on grade level.
EX 2- ISIP: I-station's monthly computerized test to assess students achievement in the 4 main components in literacy.
Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is to gather evidence of student learning, providing feedback, and adjusting instruction!
EX1-Exit slip: students answer a few questions about what they learned in class that day. Teacher may use open ended or multiple choice questions.
EX2-Discussion: Teacher may asking probing questions to gauge what students have learned so far and what they may need extra instruction on.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used at the end of a unit or school year. There is no reteach or adjust meant, it's a students final assessment of knowledge for the unit.
EX 1- STAAR: Texas's standardized test given at the end of a school year for all subjects. Determines what a students knowledge is for a specific grade level subject.
EX 2- FINALS: Tests given in at the end of a semester in college to assess a students knowledge for the whole class.
Diagnostic
Definition: A diagnostic assessment is used to determine what students have strengths and weakness in. It is used to pre-assess a certain topic or area level.
EX 1- Spelling Inventory test: A pre-assessments on phonics skills. Mainly used in elementary school. Lets the teacher know what phonics skills a student needs intervention on.
EX 2- PAST test: Phonological awareness skills test that diagnosis strengths and weaknesses a student has with all phonological skills.
