Formative
Definition: An assessment used to gauge where students are in their learning. It tells the teacher if she needs to change what she is doing or keep it the same. It is not normally taken for a grade.
Quick Look: Students will do a math problem on their whiteboard and hold it up when they are finished. The teacher will make note of who got the wrong answer.
Exit Ticket: Students will write down two interesting facts from the reading and turn it in as they leave.
Summative
Definition: Assessments taken to see what students have learned. These are normally taken for a grade after a unit is over.
Essay: Students have planned, written a rough draft, and turn in their final draft over the American Revolution.
Unit Test: After the American Revolution is over, students take a test to show what they learned.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: A test to see what students have learned throughout the year or 9 weeks. Normally these tests are made for an entire state or district, so they are not made by the teacher.
STAAR:Every student in Texas public schools take this test at the end of the year to make sure students learned what they were supposed to.
District Assessments: These are taken every nine weeks to make sure students are on track for each part of the year.
Diagnostic
Definition: A type of pre-assessment teachers can use to evaluate students strengths and weaknesses. They can use the information to tailor their teaching toward those strengths and weaknesses.
Survey: Understand students background knowledge, personality, or home life.
Running Records: A student reads while the teacher notes what words they miss and get right while also tracking fluency, comprehension, and types of errors.
