Assessments

Formative- An assessment that helps teachers determine next steps during the learning process. This type of an assessment is not for a grade but more for a check of understanding during the lesson to see what students are still needing to learn.
Example: Thumbs-Up- The teacher can ask how the students feel about the lesson and what they are gaining by giving a thumbs-up, a thumbs-up in the middle, or a thumbs-down. This is a quick assessment to see how students feel they are learning.
Example: Exit Ticket- Students can write on a notecard or a sticky note one to two things they learned during today's lesson. Teachers could also ask a question and students would answer the question on the exit ticket before leaving class.
Summative- Summative Assessments are given periodically to determine at a particular point in time what students know and do not know.
Example: A Project- Students have to create a model of the Solar System and the planets have to be the same color and have the same features as real-life.

Interim/Benchmark- An assessment that a students' grasp on content as well as to guide future instruction. Benchmark assessments are between formative and summative assessments.

Example: District Assessment- Students take one in every subject every six weeks to see what they learned in the six weeks and to guide instruction for the next six weeks,
Diagnostic- An assessment that tests determines a student's strengths and weaknesses. This is usually some type of pre-assessment.
Example: Running Record- this tests a student's reading ability as well as fluency.
Example: Sight word lists- Having a student take tests over their sight words is a form of a diagnostic assessment.
