THE PRE-READING STAGE
Pre-reading is the preparation that a reader makes before beginning to read a text in detail
Can be used in pre-reading activities.
ACTIVITIES
WORD DICTATION
The student actively listens to what the teacher is dictating.
For example words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings.
FOR EXAMPLE
Face – Phase. Face: noun (cara)
Button - Bottom. Button: noun (botón)
FINDING SYNONYMS OR DEFINITIONS
students work in small groups
Each group has a set of word cards that contain the key vocabulary from the text.
All groups had to compete to match the synonyms.
Students develop their understanding of the meaning of important keywords for better understanding when reading texts
SMURF' THE WORDS
A guess in context activity is a way to encourage interaction between students and compete with each other.
FOR EXAMPLE
Dinosaurs are animals that SMURF millions of years ago.
PREDICTION
Encourage students to think critically.
You can divide the students into teams.
You can do it in a group to exchange ideas.
Give each team a clue of the reading, they can be: the title of the text, visual images, videos or a part of the text.
