Formative
Definition: Used to adjust instruction based on students responses. Provides feedback for the teacher to use in order to address misconceptions and questions during the lesson. Usually a small part of grades.
Examples
Warm-ups: given at the beginning of units can be used to address problems as a whole class. The data and information collected will influence the lesson to help with misconceptions.
Questions: during instruction can help guide the lesson or address misconceptions students are experiencing. If students do not understand what a word problem is asking, the teacher can model their thinking and strategies to use.
Summative
Definition: Given to students after they have learned a large amount of information. Since it is usually given at end of units, it counts for a large part of the grade.
Examples
Final exams: Given at the end of units in order to check students understanding over multiple concepts learned.

Benchmark
Definition: These assessments are given multiple times throughout the year to track students progress. It is used to compare data to see how students will do on future assessments. Not taken as grades.

District Assessments: Data is collected every week in order to see if students are understanding the concepts. The assessments can be reviewed in order to clarify the information for students and work through their mistakes.
Performance
Definition: Used as students complete tasks given to them individually or with others. It is having the students show their knowledge in a different and creative way.
Examples
Posters: These can be used to have students explain concepts by creating a poster. The poster is used to explain a concept in a creative way using words, drawings, and presentations.
Individual projects: Students are able to create projects over topics based on their own ideas. They show their knowledge of content in their own ways.
Diagnostic
Definition: Assessments given as pre-assessments in order to know where students are before instruction. Helps the teacher know the students needs, strengths, and skills prior to learning.

Surveys: Used to assess how students feel about the concepts and topics being covered from being able to teach it to not having any idea.
