Oral Stage
Pleasure from biting and sucking. Orally passive: dependent, passive and gullible. Orally aggressive: aggressive. Fixation = chew on pens and bite their fingernails and smoke.

Latent Stage
Libido is displaced throughout the body and seems relatively calm in development with no complexes to resolve or focus.

Oedipal Complex: boys develop sexual desire for his mother. The boy becomes jealous of his father. He also fears that his father will castrate him. The boy is in a state of conflict and deals with this by identifying with his father. The boy substitutes the desire for his mother with a desire for other women.
Electra Complex: The girl realises that she has no penis and blames her mother for this. The girl begins to develop sexual desire for her father. the girl becomes jealous of her mother. The girl realises that she cannot have a penis or her father and deals with this by identifying her mother. The girl substitutes her desire for a penis with a desire for a baby boy and she substitutes the desire for her father with a desire for other men.
(+) Possible long term effects of traumatic events in childhood such as child abuse and parental separation.
(-) Gender biased: the theory focused almost entirely on male development with little mention of female psychosexual development.
Psychoanalysis: Time consuming and expensive, has limited use. The therapist and patient build up a therapeutic relationship. Therapist lets patient talk and they don't make judgments and even sit behind the patient so they can't see them.
