Ocean Pollution Stakeholders
Ocean Animals
Ocean pollution directly and indirectly harms/kills marine life (i.e. when seals get tangled in plastic fishing nets, or when turtles consume plastic bags they mistake for jelly fish).
For some smaller marine creatures, trash heaps like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch create a safe habitat to hide from predators.
Fisherman
Negatively impacted: fishermen will have less catch due to large quantities of fish dying from ocean pollution. Their nets and supplies can also get caught on pollution/ they catch pollution while fishing. Ocean pollution often damages fishermen's supplies and requires repair to nets and their vessels.
Positive Impacts: Ocean pollution allows fishermen to normalize littering in the oceans and don't have to properly dispose of waste.
Big Businesses
Ocean pollution is good for big business, because as long as it is allowed business can have cheap methods for packaging.
Business will fight to keep ocean pollution allowed to keep costs down on products to increase their profit.
Aquatic Plants
Negative Impacts: ocean pollution alters a plant's surrounding pH level; thus in aquatic environments, lowering waters pH levels kills plants that cannot live in these more acidic conditions.
Positive Impacts: ocean pollution is responsible for killing off aquatic life that consumes aquatic plants, so plant populations can thrive.
Sea Food Consumors
Sea food consumers could possibly consume an animal that ate garbage or was exposed to a toxic
chemical; they would then also put those harmful substances into their own bodies.
Because ocean pollution is such a concern, restaurants might more carefully inspect the food they are sending in and out of the kitchen. With the inspection, the food is safer.
Beach Vactioners
Beach vacationers come into contact with trash while they are on the beach. This disturbs their enjoyment, and exposes them to harmful substances and chemicals.
Seeing the existing pollution may cause them to believe that their actions have no real affect on the environment, giving them an excuse to litter.
Travelers (cruise ships, shipping companies, boats, etc.)
Ocean pollution damages engines, vessels, and pipelines; this means repairs are needed much more often than otherwise necessary.
Travelers can be careless about the amount of waste and oil that they omit into the ocean.
