Hitler's plan :
Resume of the start of WW2
Hitlers plan:
Destroy the Treaty of Versailles
Create a greater Germany
Destroy comunism
Acquaire lebensraum or "living space"
Build up central european empire
Remilitarization of the Rhineland
German troops march into the Rhineland (March, 1936).
France and Britain did not stop Hitler.
Rearmament
When Hitler came into power in 1933, one of his first steps was to increase the armed forces of Germany. Thousands of unemployed workers were introduced to the army making:
the number of unemployed to reduce
Germany to be strong again
challenged the treaty of Versailles.
It was very popular
It boosted more support to the Nazi Party
:
1935- Hitler opens a military rally to celebrate all German armed forces.
1936- Hitler reintroduces conscription to the country breaking the terms of the Treaty of Versailles.
Saar Plebicite 1935
Saarland was taken away 15 years ago (Treaty of Versailles)
Majority of people living in there, were Germans
January of 1935, in the Saar plebiscite, 91% of people voted for the reunification with Germany.
The plebiscite was a demonstration of the support for the Nazi Party.
The spanish civil war
→ 1936 - Spanish civil war in Spain between supporters of the republican government and right-wing rebels under general Franco.
→ Mussolini sent Italian troops. Germany sent aircraft and pilots.
→ The conflict had important consequences for peace. Strengthened the bonds between Mussolini and Hitler.
→ France and Britain refused to intervene directly - France provided weapons for the republicans.
Sudetenland and Munich Conference, 1938
Hitler demands that 3 million German speakers that lived on the Sudetenland to return to the German reich.
Hitler secretly asked Mussolini to call a conference of European leaders.
Munich conference (1938):
Chamberlain (England) , Hitler (Germany), Daladier (France) & Mussolini (Italy) met in Munich.
Chamberlain and Hitler agreed that Czechoslovakia should give Germany any areas with 50% of German people.
Britain persuaded Czechoslovakia to agree.
Anschluss: the union with Austria, 1938
Hitler believed Germany and Austria belonged together
1934 → tries to take over Austria but Mussolini stops him
1937 → Mussolini and Hitler allied
In 1938, 99% of Austrians voted to accept the union of Germany and Austria.
Nazi Soviet Pact
The pact cleared the way for Hitler to invade Poland.
1 September 1939 → Germany invaded Poland.
Britain and France demanded that he leave Poland or they would declare war on him.
Hitler, after the experience of the past, was certain that Britain and France would not do anything.
The next move would surely be an attack on the USSR.
However, Hitler was in for a surprise → Britain and France kept his promise = so they declared war on Germany → 3 September.
Consequences:
Appeasement
Order to prevent war and give time to countries to repair or heal.
