Components of Effective Online Teaching and Learning - Coggle Diagram
Components of Effective Online
Teaching and Learning
Break out rooms
If break out rooms were used the issues with peer-to-peer interaction could have been resolved
Zoom
Good wifi
Knowing the technology you are using
Level of knowledge of online platforms can affect the flow of the lesson and student engagement
Chat
Not to be used as assessment
Not a priority for younger grades
Teachers need to know how to mediate the chat so that it is used appropriately
Synchronous and Asynchronous
Reaching students with a variety of different learning abilities
Even though it was synchronous, we couldn't see the students so in-person would have been more effective (Virtual Field Trips)
Powerpoints
Good use of power points help to direct presentation
Other tools other than power points used that helped to enhance the learning experience
Interactive games and activities
Polls were useful
Break out rooms would have been a good option to create space for interactive activities (depends on grade level)
Clear expectations and feedback
Student friendly instructions
Clear expectations at the beginning of the lesson which helped to direct learning
Limited personal feedback to each student, even with the engagement in the chat
Engagement
Teacher needs to monitor and keep track of student engagement
Use polls or other online tools to get the students engaged
Informal assessments can help to gauge where students are at in their learning
Intentional Learning Environment
Comfortable to speak up and ask questions
Student friendly instructions
Movement breaks and engaging activities
Additional resources provided by the teacher (e.g, KWL charts and work sheets)
Support and Guidance
One-on-one time
Getting to know your students to make meaningful connections
Smaller class sizes to make more meaningful connections
Physically active
Getting students moving is important to keep their engagement
Learning Environment (at home)
Quiet space
Support from family
Not always available or applicable for students
Peer-to-Peer Relationships
Building community
Being able to interact with peers is very important to creating a meaningful learning environment
Peers in the chat helped to spark curiosity and wonder towards the topic, through the use of the chat feature (Virtual Field Trips)
