Intervention for DSPS
Bright Light Therapy:
- Bright Light early in the morning
- Leads to earlier sleep onset in evening
- Avoid bright light in evening
Melatonin:
- Melatonin levels increase at night and makes you fell sleepy.

Dyssomnias- Problems in amount, timing and quality of sleep

Parasomnias
- Nightmares:
- Bad dreams with feelings of panic and distress.
- Occurs in REM sleep
- Treatments include writing down about the nightmare in detail. Then changing the nightmare anyway you wish but writing down the details of the new dream. Then imagine the changes in your dream before you fall asleep agian.
- Night Terrors and Sleep Walking
- Occurs in Stage 4NREM sleep
- Symptoms= panic sweating, increased breathing and heart rate, violent body movement and screaming.
- May walk around, talk and appear terrified.
- Little memory of them afterwards.
- Typically diminish with age
Circadian Rhythms
Light enters the eyes. Receptors retain input to SCN. This signals to the pineal gland. Inhibits the secretion of melatonin
Dyssomnias
Insomnia:
- Persistent difficulty falling or staying asleep(longer than 3 weeks) and impaired daytime functioning

Sleep Apnoea
Repeated interruption of breathing during sleep because air passages are blocked or the brain fails to send signals to the muscles that cause breathing. Patient is oblivious.
Medical intervention only:
- Continuous positive airway pressure. Air is blown into the nose and mouth to keep airways open
Narcolepsy
- Sudden and uncontrollable sleep during normal waking hours. Sufferers fall suddenly into REM sleep.
Treatment includes long naps in the day and drugs.
Delayed circadian rhythm: Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS):
- Circadian clock is set later- develop a delayed circadian rhythm.
- Go to sleep later than normal
- Have trouble waking up at a reasonable hour in the morning.
- Lack of energy in the morning
- Increased energy late at night
