affirmative action continues to be the center of debate ...conflicitng viewws on whether the policy s meeitng its goals of reparitions for past discrimmination and preventing future discrimmination
1978 Supreme Court heard a case and ruled that quotas for race were unconstitutional, but policies that required diversity were constitutional
"confirmed that diversity is relevant to achieving significant social goals" pg. 137
diversity at colleges and educational institutions has expanded beyond just race
has strayed from being stats based so to avoid legal backlash from possibly resembling quotas
following the OMB directive 15, how the statistics were being used became a central issue
political debates followed around how to categorize people that fit the grey areas between categories or didn't neatly adhere to any category
"2000 census in America that finally confirmed the five-race taxonomy" pg. 131
Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders were removed form the Asian category
Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders get theri own racial classification and are added as the fifth race group

if a person can now mark more than one race, it challenges why race stats are being collected

public opinion in the US has shown a steady increase in support of the governemnt not collecting race statistics
"new racism" where whites see discrepencies between whites and blacks as a result of blacks just not working hard enough
melting-pot analogy is being revamped to include non-whites
ideas of a color blind society are coming up again
laws were constructed to make discrimmination illegal, but it didn't undo the already racially skewed systems in place
"not until the 1950s did the federal government begin to dismantle what in fact was a legally sanctioned racial hierarchy in employment, education, transportation, health care, and housing" pg. 142

deliberation on how to end discrimmination has some arguing that we cannot use any form of racial counting (or other forms of affirmative action) to end or fix discrimmination
fear of giving "official recognition to targeted or protected groups" pg. 145
if you single out the groups that you are trying to give equal treatment too you can put that group of people at risk
