Formative
Definition: a process of gathering evidence of student learning and using that evidence to guide instruction. Can be simple and quick

Diagnostic
Defintion: this type of assessment helps a teacher determine a students strengths and weaknesses in a content area and allows the teacher to build on and or provide additional support.
Example: PSI test or Primary Spelling Inventory, this is designed to show a teacher where a student encounters difficulties in spelling.
Example: Pre-test, when used in math it will provide the teacher with knowledge of what levels the students are currently at
Performance
Definition: a test that requires an action by students, usually more hands-on versus having a multiple choice test.
Example: Presentations, a group of students must collaborate to present information on a topic
Example: Science Labs, students are using tools to measure and evaluate in an experiment

Definition: a way to evaluate and summarize student learning at the end of a unit, usually a more high stakes setting such as a test

Example: Writing a persuasive essay using the knowledge they have now about the structure and features of a persuasive essay
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: a standardized test that evaluates a child's current level of comprehension and determines in they are on track for further growth.
Example: District Assessments are used throughout the school year to determine if students are on track for success on the STAAR
Example: STAAR is used by the state to assess a student's achievement and determine if they are ready for the next grade level
