Narrative tenses
Past perfect
Form: S + had + V3 + O
Example
(+) I had been to London last month.
(-) I hadn't never been to London.
(?) Have you ever been to London?
Use: to show an action happened before another past action
Past continuous
Form: S + was/were + V_ing + O
Example
(-) I wasn't finishing my essay.
(?) Were you having dinner in that restaurant?
(+) I was writing my essay.
Use: actions are in process at a certain time in the past
Past perfect continuous
Form: S + had been + V_ing + O
Example
(+) I had been studying in Paris for 3 years.
(-) I hadn't been working.
(?) Had you been working?
Use: actions or states are incomplete, emphasis the duration
Past simple
Form: S + V2 + O
Example
(-) I didn't eat that pizza.
(?) Did you eat tha pizza?
(+) I ate that pizza yesterday.
Use: actions or states that were completed in the past
