Formative
Definition: this is a way that students can assess their students in a small sense and get immediate feedback for the way the teach
Exit Ticket: A quick 1 or 2 question quiz to assess a students understanding of a concept just learned
Questioning: Teachers can conduct a formative assessment just by listening to the types of questions the students ask during learning
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: This is a test given at different times during the school year in order to determine a students learning and how it will be in the future grades
End of Chapter Test: This is a test given at the end of a specific chapter the students have been learning to see what information they retained.
Projects: Students have to create a project about a concept to show what they learned about it.
Summative
Definition: This test is used to evaluate the students at the very end of the concept to see what information they retained.
Final/Midterm Exams: These are tests given at the middle or end point of the year to test what the students have learned about the concepts taught
Portfolios: This is a cumulation of everything the student has done from the start to the end of the unit to see everything the students have done.
Performance
Definitions: This test is where the teachers test the students knowledge and skills about a given topic by watching them perform a specific task
Short-Response Questions: These are questions where the students are required to write out their thought process in a paragraph or less.
Labs: Students apply what they have learned about a science concept to perform an action required for the lab.
Diagnostics
Definition: These are assessments that tell the teacher where the students are at with their learning (strengths and weaknesses) before beginning the unit
Pre-Tests: These are tests that are given before teaching a unit to see what students already know about the concept.
Running Records: This is given to students at the beginning of the year to see what level the students are starting at with reading.
