Formative
Definition: A formative assessment is a way of gathering evidence of student learning by providing feedback and adjusting instruction in order to enhance achievement.
Quiz: Students will complete a quiz over a certain topic. The teacher will use this quiz to observe any misconceptions the students may have over the topic and address them the next day in class.
In-Class Discussions: Students will answer questions, give feedback, and participate in activities that will demonstrate whether they comprehend the topic as well as observe any misconceptions they may have.
Summative
Definition: A summative assessment is a way of evaluating student learning at the end of a specific term as well as monitoring if they are on track with what they know and do not know.
Unit Tests: Students will complete a test at the end of the unit in which they will be tested over their comprehension.
End of Year Assessment: Students will complete a test at the end of the year in which measures what they comprehended throughout the entire year.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An interim or benchmark assessment is when a teacher compares a student's performance against a set of consistent standards within an academic year.
District Assessments: At the end of each six weeks, students will be presented with a district assessment. This assessment will cover the topics taught in the last six weeks. The teachers will then observe the student's scores with the standards covered in the assessment. These scores will help teachers determine where the student lands when looking at the long-term goal of the STAAR test in May.
Project with Scored Rubric: Students will complete a project in which will be scored based on a rubric. The rubric will have standards in which the students will follow to receive their grade.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is when students are asked to perform a task rather than select an answer.
Short Answer: Students will write a short paragraph when asked a question instead of a multiple choice question.
Speech: Students are asked to present information from a unit or topic to either the teacher, a small group, or their entire class.
Diagnostic
Definition: A diagnostic assessment is given at the beginning of the year to identify students' strengths and weaknesses and will help teachers plan their instruction.
Pre-Assessment: An assessment that is administered at the beginning of a unit to see what students know and do not know within the unit.
Running Record: A method that measures how well a student reads as well as their specific reading behaviors.
