Assessments
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are a way to gather evidence of student learning. They provide feedback that can be used to adjust instruction and monitor progress of a student. These are low stake assessments.

Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are given after a large chunk of learning, such as at the end of a unit.
End of Unit Test: These can show you everything a student has learned over the period of an entire unit.
Final Exams/Projects/Essays: These types of assessments given at the end of a semester are typically summative as they show what the student has learned throughout the whole semester.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Benchmark tests are periodic tests given through the school year. These are more formal and are used to assess where students are at periods through the year to see if they are learning what they are supposed to.
District Assessments: These are benchmark tests given every 9 weeks to show how students are progressing through material they need to learn.
STAAR Tests: STAAR tests are given at the end of each grade level to show what a student learned through the year and if they are on track to move to the next grade level.

Diagnostic
Definition:These assessments are used to help teachers know what students know and what they can and can't do. This is a way for teachers to see prior knowledge and misconceptions of students.
Pre-Assessments for a new unit: These are typically given before starting a new unit in a subject to see what students might already know about the topic.
Informal Writing Prompts: These can be given to students at any point to see what they know and can't do in regards to writing.

Performance
Definition: These assessments require students to produce something, rather than taking a test.
Comic Strip: You could use a comic strip to have students draw out different parts of a story or historical event and caption each drawing.

Google Slides: You can have students create their own Google Slides presentation over a topic to show their understanding of that topic. I have had students do this in my Texas History class over a Native American Indian tribe we learned about.
