Formative
Definition: A way to gather evidence of student learning and this is done through feedback and adjusting instruction to the students.
Example 2: Group Discussion- the discussion is student led and as the students answer around and communicate around the room, the teacher observes and notes each student's participation.
Example 1: Daily exit ticket- students will write about a topic regarding the information or main agenda of the class that day.
Diagnostic
Definition: A diagnostic assessment is administered to students as a pre-assessment, for teachers to see what the student does or does not know. Instruction from that point on can be guided to meet the student's needs.
Example 1: Survey of the Cold War- simple way to see what the students already know before you start.
Example 2: KWL Chart- Students will state what they already know, what they are interested in learning, and what they actually learned.
Summative
Definition: Used to wrap up and evaluate the students after a larger section of learning. This involves high risk because the value of the tests are greater.
Example 1: Portfolio project- The students worked an entire 6 weeks on a portfolio regarding a specific topic within the Cold War.
Example 2: A paper over a book or specialized topic in class- the students are given the Unit or 6-weeks time to write a paper over a book or topic that was given to them about the Cold War.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Periodic testing throughout the school year to mark more formal performances like tests, projects, and other large assignments.
Example 1: A 6 Weeks Test- This test comes after each 6-week grading period. There are a certain amount of units that must be covered during this time and the students are responsible for all of them.
Example 2: Unit/Chapter test- this assessment could be given after each unit or chapter have been completed. Sometimes every week or every other week, depending on the pace of the class.
Performance
Definition: A performance is completing certain jobs or tasks, not necessarily answering test questions.
Definition 1: Completing a research paper- students will conduct research and be given a certain amount of time to complete each step leading up to the final due date.
Definition 2: Concept maps- students will create visuals to help them understand the information and vocabulary better.
