Formative
Definition: A formative assessment is a way to gather evidence about how well the student is grasping the content. This guides future instruction.
Quizizz: An interactive online game where students answer a series of questions and real-time results are posted.
Four Corners: The words strongly agree, agree, disagree and strongly disagree are posted in different corners of the room. The teacher poses a statement and the students must go to the corner that best aligns with their view. The class then discusses.
Interim/Benchmark
Definiton: These tests evaluate student learning progress at specific periods of time and predict future success on summative assessments.
STAAR Interim Assessments: These tests are used to predict how students will preform on the STAAR test.
Benchmark Essay: Students write an essay to see how well they will preform on the state standardized test. For example, 4th grade students write an expository essay to practice for the STAAR Writing test.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are given at the end of a unit or school year, where learning has already taken place. This is used to evaluate how well the student has understood the content.
State Standardized Tests: Assessments mandated by the state that are used to evaluate a student's overall learning at the end of the year. This is the STAAR test in Texas.
Unit Tests: Tests given at the end of a unit to evaluate student learning. For example, 5th grade students will be given a test over Unit 01: Investigating Phsyical Properties of Matter.
