Formative
Example 1: An example of a formative assessment could be an exit ticket. Students would complete this at the end of the class and this would allow the teacher to check for the students understanding.
Example 2: Another example of a formative assessment is a quiz. A quiz would allow the teacher to check for students understanding.
Definition: Formative assessments check for understanding and help guide the teacher on instruction. Formative assessments have a lower weight then other assessments.
Performance
Example 1: An example of a performance assessment is a lab that a student completes. This would measure the students ability to perform a task.
Example 2: Another example of a performance assessment is an open ended essay question. This allows the students to perform based on what they know.
Definition: Performance assessments is a test that measures the students ability to perform a certain task.
Diagnostic
Example 1: An example of a diagnostic assessment is a running record. This allows the teacher to determine the students specific reading level.
Example 2: Another example of a diagnostic assessment could be a Dolch word test. This measures the students ability to read sight words correctly.
Definition: Diagnostic assessments is when teachers assess students in different ways to really determine the students strengths and weaknesses in certain areas.
Summative
Example 1: An example of a summative assessment is an end of unit test. This measures the students knowledge over a longer amount of time.
Example 2: Another example of a summative assessment could be a final project that is completed at the end of a course.
Definition: Summative assessments are used to assess students learning at the end of an instructional unit. These assessments are extremely important and have a higher weight to them.
Interim/Benchmark
Example 1: An example of a interim/benchmark assessment is a benchmark exam. This measures the students knowledge of content.
Example 2: Another example of a interim/benchmark assessment is an individual project that a student completes and is given a rubric to follow.
Definition: Interim/benchmark assessments are used throughout the school year to determine students knowledge of content and guide further instruction.
