The Nervous System, Transmits info to & from CNS
Contains all…
The Nervous System
Peripheral
Autonomic NS
Parasympathetic
(calming)
- Enables body to conserve & restore energy
- Maintains body functions under ordinary conditions
Sympathetic
(arousing)
- Prepares the body to react by mobilizing body resources & expending energy in times of stress
Somatic NS
Sensory
(afferent)
- Carries messages from senses to CNS
Motor
(efferent)
- Carries messages from CNS to muscles & glands
Central
Brain
- Receives, interprets, stores info & sends orders to muscles, glands & organs
Spinal Cord
- Pathway connecting brain and PNS
- Collection of neurons & supportive tissue running from base of brair down center of back, protected by a column of bones (spinal cord)
Functions
- Gather & process info
- Produce responses to stimuli
- Coordinate operations of diff cells
- Transmits info to & from CNS
- Contains all portions of NS excl brain & spinal cord, incl sensory & motor nerves connecting CNS to rest of body
- Controls functioning of internal organs, glands & blood vessels
- Operates on its own (but maybe overriden)
- Consists of 2 parts working tgt in opposing ways
- Controls body's skeletal muscles
- Includes nerves that are connected to sensory receptors (cells that allow us to sense things) and skeletal muscles (allowing for voluntary action)
