Perceiving Others

First Impressions
Primacy Effect - our tendency to pay more attention and better recall the first thing/interaction that happens(120)
Example - I went to a steakhouse and had a bad meal. Even though the other options on the menu may be a lot better, the first impression was bad so I am not going there again.
Halo Effect - tendency to form an overall positive impression of a person on the basis of one positive characteristic (120)
(Personal/opinion) - Kind of makes sense. When I see someone who has nice skin or is in shape, I assume that they are the kind of person who takes good care of themself
Horns effect - opposite of halo effect. Lots of people may assume that homeless people are dangerous when a lot of the time they are really nice people

Self Serving Bias - when we perform poorly, we blame external forces rather than take accountability for our own actions (121).
(Personal) - These past few years I learned that I need to be accountable. I really wanted an internship my freshman year. I applied to multiple internships but got rejected from all of them. It was really easy to blame it on other things like discrimination when in reality I simply wasn't good enough. From there on I did things to improve my value to a company and got an internship my sophomore year.
Example: When someone messes up, we think that the person is bad at what they do. However when we mess up we make up an excuse blaming it on an external factor
(Personal/opinion) - I feel like I see this a lot in todays world. People will do the least expecting the most in return and when they don't get what they want they will complain.
