Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are usually used to measure student's learning at the end of a unit or the end of the year. These are usually worth a higher grade, and make up a large percentage of students overall grade. Also defined as a "high-stake" assessment.
EOC: Students are often required to practice for and take an End Of Course Exam at the end of the year.
Unit Exam: Students will take this test at the end of each unit, consisting of multiple choice questions, short answer questions, and essay type questions.
Formative
Definition: The process of gathering evidence of student learning by collecting feedback with the ultimate goal of adjusting strategies to enhance student achievement. This type of assessment is mainly used as a way for teachers to check that their students are understanding the content being taught, and are often not worth a grade.
Discussion: Students will participate in an in class discussion as a teacher asks questions that relate to the lecture she just finished up. This discussion with guide the teacher in what to teach or reteach going forward.
Survey: Students will fill out a Google Form and be asked a few questions about what they have learned or what parts of the class/teacher's methods that works for them or parts that they do not like. This will help the teacher shift her teaching to support their student's as much as possible.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim or benchmark assessments is a form of assessment that evaluates students where they are in their learning progress and determines if they are on track for future classes and assessments.
AP Exam: The AP exam is another example of an interim/benchmark test. Depending on the particular class, students will be tested over the set benchmarks for that class on a standardizes level.
STARR: Students will take this standardized test, which will determine if they are meeting the benchmarks set for that grade level and demonstrates that they are ready to move on. Scores will also notify the district of how effective their teaching is.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is an assessment that asks students to perform an action or task instead of just answering questions on a piece of paper.
Presentation: Students will give a presentation over an American Revolution figure to show what they were able to understand from this era.
Political Cartoon Drawing: Students would create their own political cartoon based on the Spanish American War.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessment can be defined as a form of pretesting to determine the student's background knowledge over a given topic or unit. This will guide the instruction to come.
Pop Quiz: Students are given a pre-test that they did not know was coming. The quiz will be over the content that they are about to begin so that the teacher can shape their lesson around the results.
Vocab Test: This test would be given at the beginning of a unit over words that have not been taught yet to gauge which words need to be taught and which words students already know well.
