Chasitty Morales p.6 Skeletal System
Names of all Bones:
Skull – including the jaw bone.
Spine – cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, sacrum and tailbone (coccyx)
Chest – ribs and breastbone (sternum)
Arms – shoulder blade (scapula), collar bone (clavicle), humerus, radius and ulna.
Hands – wrist bones (carpals), metacarpals and phalanges.
Pelvis – hip bones.
Bone Remodeling: Bone remodeling is a lifelong process where mature bone tissue is removed from the skeleton and new bone tissue is formed.
Differences between male and female skeletons
Female: A female skeleton is smother
Male: A male's skeleton is usually thicker, rougher and appears more bumpy
Joints:A joint is the part of the body where two or more bones meet to allow movement.
Movements allowed by Synovial Joints:to slide past each other or to rotate around each other
Bone Fracture Repair:
1) the formation of hematoma at the break
2) the formation of a fibro cartilaginous callus
3) the formation of a bony callus
4) remodeling and addition of compact bone
disorders : osteoporosis and osteoarthritis
Types of Bones:
Long bone – has a long, thin shape.
Short bone – has a squat, cubed shape.
Flat bone – has a flattened, broad surface.
Irregular bone – has a shape that does not conform to the above three types
Anatomy of the long bone: Long bones have a thick outside layer of compact bone and an inner medullary cavity containing bone marrow
