Great Exhibition
In 1851 a Great Exhibition, organised by Prince
Albert, showed the world Britain's industrial
and economic power. The exhibition was
housed at the Crystal Palace, a huge structure
of glass and steel designed by Sir Joseph Paxton
and erected in Hyde Park. More than 15,000
exhibitors from all over the world displayed
their goods to millions of visitors.

Charles Dickens
Life: He was born in Portsmouth
in 1812, he had an unhappy childhood because his father was imprisoned for debt when he was 12 and he started working in factories. He married Catherine Hogarth in April 1836.
Works: He began to work as a reporter for a newspaper. His career starts with the publication of "Sketches by Boz". Then he started a full-time career as a novelist but he continued his journalistic and editorial activities. One of his Masterpiece is "Oliver Twist" (1837) and "A Christmas Carol"
Characters: Upper-middle-class world was replaced by the one of the lower orders. Children are usually the most important characters in Dickens's novels.
