The Role of the Unconscious Freud uses the Iceberg model to explain the mind. The conscious mind is 'the tip of the iceberg'. Under this is the preconscious mind, which contains thoughts and memories which we aren't currently conscious of, but we can access if desired. Yet most of our mind is made up of the unconscious. This is where biological drives, instincts, and repressed memories are stored, and they have a significant influence on our behaviour and personality. Parapraxes are 'slips of the tongue', which reveal the disturbing memories which have been repressed.
