Diagnostic
Definition: Form of assessment used to gauge student knowledge before a topic is taught. Can use pre-assessment and post-assessment to see how much students have grown.
Examples: 1. KWL Chart to show what students know, what they want to know, and what they want to learn
- Dolch Sight Word lists: Helps teacher gauge what words students know and where they struggle
Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used to gauge student understanding in a low-stakes environment. Teachers can give immediate feedback, and teachers can see if the lesson needs to be adjusted.

Definition: Summative assessments are used to check student understanding in a high-stakes environment. They are typically at the end of a unit.
