Ethical Issue Intensity - Relevance or importance of and event or decision in the eyes of the individual.
Moral intensity - and individuals' perceptions of social pressure and the harm they believe their decisions will have on others.
Individual factors in ethical decisions include gender, education, nationality, and age.
Comparing the firm's activities with its mission statement, goals, and objectives helps the organization understand whether it is staying true to its values." pg. 134
Opportunity is a key to look at when considering your organization's. Do they permit or limit ethical or unethical behavior?
individuals employed by one organization for many years become "gatekeepers" of its culture. Have the opportunity to make decision related to unwritten traditions and rules.
Institutions are the foundation of normative values.
Three Categories of institutions. Political, economic, and social.
Implementing principles and core values can help ethical decision making.
"Principles are important in preventing organizations from "bending the rules". pg. 143
Principles are, widely accepted, used to develop values and standards. They establish pervasive boundaries for behavior. they are valued across cultures.
Values are subjective and related to choice, used to develop norms, provide guidance to organizations and differ across cultures and firms.
Values are shaped by company-specific, industry-specific, country-specific, and globa-specific factors. pg. 143
Ethical Leadership - ability or authority to guide and direct others toward a goal. It creates and ethical culture.
Normative myopia - overlooking or stifle the importance of core values in their business decision.
Happens for 3 reasons, belief that normative values do not apply, belief that facts and values can be separated in decision making, and the belief that normative values are outside the realm of business.
What does it take to have ethical leadership?
Character, competence, lead and guide others. Need training, model organizational values, selfless. No solo decision making. encourage development of other leaders. Passionate about the organization. Act in it's best interests.
What happens if we do what is discribled? Employees will be familiar with the company's purpose and beliefs. Cultural Motivation for ethical behavior. Higher employee satisfaction.
